The Camel Dairy Smits was established in 2006 by Frank Smith, then a student in 's-Hertogenbosch. Below you can read about the history of the company.
Camel Milk Project
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) camel milk is one of the healthiest animal milks. FAO encourages therefore the production of camel milk.
In response, Frank Smith, examined in the course of his studie at the Higher Agricultural School in 's-Hertogenbosch, whether it was economically possible in the Netherlands to bring camel milk on the market. It seemed so interesting to Frank that he started with milking camels.
Location
In 2006 the municipality of Den Bosch temporarily loaned ¾ acre to Frank. Here arrived in 2006 the first 3 camels from the Canary Islands.
After a boat trip of 5 days, the animals were transported from Spain to the Netherlands with a trailer, especially for camels.
At the end of 2006 the camels moved to the winter stable in Cromvoirt. There, in the spring of 2007, the first calves were born. Since then, camel milk is available in the Netherlands.
In September 2010, the Camel Dairy moved to Berlicum, to a large site with more space for more camels. In 2012 there are already 70 camels.
Milk
The first aim was to investigate whether it was possible to milk the camels with a machine and to survey the possibilities for sales. The machines for milking the animals were invented by Frank himself. So now the animals are milked with an adapted cow’s milk machine.
Philosophy
The following issues are important on the Camel Farm:
Welfare
Innovation
Social responsibility
Scientific responsibility
Welfare
Camels are very intelligent animals with a good memory. It is a friendly animal that penalizes unfriendly behavior. It is therefore important to treat the animals well.
On the dairy a regular scheme is pursued for the animals. During milking it must be quiet in the stables as much as possible to prevent stress.
Innovation
Milking camels in the Netherlands and Europe is new. Innovation is important on Camel Dairy Smits. Therefore we continue to develop new products from camel milk, but also for our visitors we are always looking for new and innovative activities. At this way the concept of Camel Dairy stays attractive for everyone.
Social responsibility
The camel is a friendly, cuddly animal that penalizes unfriendly behavior.
During tours and activities at the dairy we try to teach the people to treat the animals in a right and respectful way. Thus children learn on a playful way the importance of "relationships" and "taking care of" and adults learn to take a leadership position.
Scientific responsibility
Camel milk is much closer to human milk than to other types of milk and is a symbol of nature and health. Many studies on the health effects of camel milk for various conditions are already conducted by different institutes and universities. Camel Dairy Smits also contributes to some studies.
